Can I wear headphones for the race?
The use of personal stereos, iPods, phones or other music devises is not allowed under UKA rule 240 S5 – the wearing of headphones, or similar devices, (other than those medically prescribed), is not permitted in races on any single carriageway road that is not wholly closed to traffic. There are some short sections on the Fleet 5k and 10k course which do have traffic coming in the opposite direction to runners and is therefore not wholly closed. The wearing of such equipment may prevent you from hearing instructions from marshals and other event staff as well as the hearing of sirens/horns from emergency services and other vehicles. By wearing such devices you are putting yourself and those around you at risk. Rule 240 S5 also states if the athlete wears conductive headphones, these are acceptable as these work by conducting sound through bones and do not sit or block the ears. The event will have no responsibility should this rule be ignored.
Please do not risk our ability to get a future license for this event by ignoring this rule. -

If you are falling behind this time limit, you will be allowed to carry on but will be asked to use the pavement as we are obliged to re-open the roads according to the approved road closure agreement.

The 10k race began as the Peter Driver Memorial Road Races, inaugurated in 1972, after Peter Driver’s untimely death due to an illness. The main event, a 6-mile road race (now known as the Fleet 10k), was to commemorate his Empire Games victory, and as a tribute to his contribution to the Fleet and Crookham Athletics Club.
Having taken up distance running with the South London Harriers, Peter Driver ran his first international for England in 1952. He was successful at both the track and cross-country, and later became National Junior Cross Country Champion in 1953. In 1954, the year of Bannister’s 4-minute mile, Peter Driver played his part in England’s golden haul at the Empire Games (now the Commonwealth Games), by winning a gold medal in the 6 miles event.
Peter moved to Fleet in 1961 and joined Fleet and Crookham Athletic Club in 1962, which was then a small and very new club. He became secretary, and helped to improve and enlarge the club, giving it the base from which it flourished.
Over the years the original Peter Driver Memorial Road Races have developed to be known as the Fleet 10k, and now includes a 5km event. Although the race has evolved and the route has changed over the years, we never forget when and why the race was started. From the early days, the races have always been organised by volunteers from the host club, Fleet and Crookham AC, and this continues today. It will always be an event ‘organised by runners, for runners’ and it sits alongside the other major event organised by the club: the annual Fleet Half Marathon.
